Carroll College graduate Zach Thiry is trying out for the NFL.
The former Saints kicker, who led the nation in yards per punt average his junior year and was among the top five his senior, arrived in Philadelphia this afternoon and will have a workout session with the team on Wednesday.
Chris Gittings, one of Thiry's agents, said that the workouts could decided if the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Thiry is a suitable backup up to both David Akers, the Eagles' starting place kicker, and punter Sav Rocca.
"What they need out of a rookie is a guy that can back both those guys up and give them a rest during training camp," Gittings said. "And, if a rookie really impressed him, there would be a chance to keep him around."
While Thiry also kicked field goals for the Saints his senior year, his top priority is kickoff and punts.
