Area athletes turn in top times at State Games

Montana City's Carly Smiedala, age 10, broke the Big Sky State Games track and field record in the girls 10-11 age group 800-meter run with a time of 2:44.5. She also won the 400m dash with a time of 1:10.5.

Josey Smiedala, age 12, also from Montana City, won her age group for the Big Sky State Games 5K road race Friday night with a time of 24:39.

Two Senators to play college baseball

Two players from the Helena Senators are slated to play college baseball in the upcoming school year.

Matt Williams will attend Jamestown College, while Mike Bartlett plans to attend Spokane Community College.

Williams plays centerfield and pitches for the Senators. The Jimmies have provided him with some financial assistance to play the outfield, including partial academic and baseball scholarships.

Bartlett has played several different positions for the local Legion club, including the outfield, catcher, infield and pitcher. He has been invited to walk-on for Spokane.

Local athletes clean up at rodeo

Boulder's Ben Wrzesinski won the bareback at the C.M. Russell Days Rodeo in Stanford. Wrzesinski scored a 76 and won $342 for his effort.

Helenans Walt Anseth and Nick Stubblefield split second and third in the steer wrestling with times of 4.6 seconds each, winning $444 in the process. Winston's Lindsay Knaff took third in the barrel racing and took home $484.
