Gonzaga All-American basketball star Adam Morrison has roots that run deep in Montana. His father is John Morrison, who is from Scobey and later went on to become the head coach at Dawson Community College in Glendive, where Adam was born.
Morrison is the NCAA Division I scoring leader with 28.6 points per game.
While at DCC, John Morrison was a finalist for the Carroll College head men's basketball position in the late 1980s, according to current Fighting Saints head coach Gary Turcott. Turcott was also in the running for the position, but neither got the nod.
While defense isn't Morrison's calling card Turcott says he likes Morrison's chances at being a top draft pick this summer and making it in the NBA citing his ability to score from outside, mid-range and inside.
Known for his quick feet former Montana State University quarterback Travis Lulay didn't hurt his stock at the NFL Combine this past weekend in Indianapolis. He posted a time of 4.07 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle and that was second fastest next to the 4.00 posted by Marcus Vick.
Fellow ex-Big Sky Conference quarterback Erik Meyer of Eastern Washington joined Lulay at the event. Both players are expected to get a free agent tryout this summer with a NFL team.
The Carroll College men's basketball team hasn't lost a home game in over two years. The streak dates back 29 games. The Saints are done playing this season in Helena and are prepping for the Frontier Tournament that begins this Wednesday in Butte.
Another crosstown boys match-up is in the works. The Helena High Bengals will play at Capital High if they can go on the road and knock off last year's AA State champion Missoula Hellgate.
It's old news that the Carroll College vs. University of Montana football game isn't going to happen in 2006, but athletic director Bruce Parker did get over to Missoula to visit with UM officials about its possibility.
According to Parker, the Iowa Hawkeyes ended any chance of the Saints playing in Missoula this fall. The Hawkeyes are giving UM a $650,000 payout for the game in Iowa this fall.
"I appreciate (UM athletic director) Jim O'Day sitting down with me," Parker said. "It showed great respect for our program and coach (Mike)Van Diest."
According to Parker all the suite and chairback seating leases have come due at Nelson Field and the school will begin re-doing the leases soon. Carroll is looking into new chairback seats to replace the existing ones in Section D outside. The originals were from the Kingdome in Seattle and weren't made for the outdoors.
