Guay wins Millers Masters Bowling tourney
It was an all-Canadian final in the Millers Masters bowling tournament at Sleeping Giant Lanes Sunday, with Jack Guay of Calgary emerging victorious. Guay defeated Colleen Insco of Medicine Hat, 206-188 for the championship. It was his second Millers' title, having captured the 2006 tourney. "Now I've got a little money for Las Vegas," quipped Guay, after collecting his $1,300 first place check. The 53-year old Canadian, who is a member of the Roto Grip staff, will be competing in the High Roller Super Bowl in Vegas in April.
Guay and Insco are no strangers on the alleys. "She's tough to beat. We've met several times, and she beat me in match play in Lethbridge," said Guay, who placed fourth at Mexico's Bowling World Cup in Hermosillo, Mex.
Insco, 34, bowled the high game on Sunday, with a 258. "This is my first time making the championship in these open tournaments," Insco said. For her career, she has fired eight 300 games and a pair of 800 series. Insco's runner-up finish garnered her $1,000 in prize money. "That's worth $1,200 exchange in Canada," she smiled.
There were 99 entrants in the Millers Masters. Thirty-two keglers made the cut of the 2-day tourney. The format on Sunday was double elimination, 2-game matches until the final four.
Helena's highest finisher was John Brodersen, who placed fourth. Rounding out the top local bowlers were Brady Kirkeby (tied for fifth), Tony Woodward (tied forseventh), Shawn Jacobs and Tracy Potvin (tied for 17th), and Doug Prewett and Matt Gorecki (tied for 25th).
Former Capital City resident Vince Saccheri, now of Idaho, tied for ninth.
Over $12,400 of prize money was distributed amongst the final 32 athletes. Wayne Miller Coins offered $5,000 to anyone who rolled a 300 game on Sunday.
