The Helena Senators are roll. They won for the seventh time in eight games when they beat the Great Falls Stallions 9-7 in a wild game at Kindrick Legion Field Wednesday night.
Corey Scevers scored four runs and was just a home run shy of the cycle, while Austin Rue went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Scevers' big game started in the inning, when he led off with a single and later scored. He finished with a double in the eighth to finish off his 3-for-3 night. He said he had a feeling the home run wouldn't come.
"I knew that wasn't going to happen," Scevers said of a homer. "I'm not much of a power hitter. I just like to do singles and doubles."
The Senators fell behind early, but used 13 team hits to stay in the game. They also benefited from two timely Stallion errors.
Grady Stinchfield got the start on the mound for the Senators, pitching five innings before giving way to Pat Morgan in the sixth. Morgan got his third win, as Helena went ahead in the seventh when Rue's triple drove Colter Sternhagen home. Hunter Day got his first save of the year, striking out three in the last two innings.
"I liked what I saw. Pitching-wise, I was more than happy," said Senators coach Dave Thennis. "They hit the ball well and we hit the ball. There were a few mistakes here and there, but I was happy."
The Stallions were led by Alex Waltri, who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a couple of runs scored, and Dan Olinger, who had two RBIs to go with a triple and a double.
"We have a long way to go, but I like the way we're playing right now," said Thennis.
The Senators are in action again Saturday as they travel to Belgrade to take on the Bandits in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
"We're playing awesome right now," said Scevers, whose team is now 7-5. "We're meshed really well. We're starting to get a win streak going now."
