PORTLAND, Ore. -- After three more touchdowns in Montana's 29-12 Big Sky Conference win at Portland State on Saturday, we now know Chase Reynolds isn't all thoroughbred; he has some plow horse in him too.
"It's November, and it's go-time," said Coach Bobby Hauck, after Reynolds piled up a career-high 160 yards on 35 carries, helping the No. 5 Grizzlies grind down the spirited Vikings in front of several thousand appreciative Griz fans at PGE Park.
The Grizzlies (9-1, 5-1 Big Sky) need wins over Idaho State next Saturday and Montana State the following week to ensure another trip to the national playoffs.
"We talked a little bit this morning in our staff meeting about riding him until he couldn't go anymore. And he went all day," Hauck added.
Reynolds had scoring runs of 18, 11 and 20 yards in the second half as the 9-1 Griz won their fifth straight, and stayed a game behind first-place Weber State in the Big Sky.
His biggest TD was his second, a burst up the gut on a surprising fourth-and-7 call to make it 23-12 late in the third quarter. His final TD, set up by Brandon Fisher's second interception of the fourth quarter, capped the scoring with 3:51 left.
Reynolds might've had more carries but sat out a series after getting swarmed under on a screen early in the fourth quarter. Extracurricular activities ensued; a personal foul on UM's J.D. Quinn is one indicator of the kind of helmet-losing, mess-talking, hanky-flying game it was for the Griz.
"I was fine. Nothing really wrong," said Reynolds. "I guess it was a cheap shot. We just did our thing. We came out and put it to them."
Reynolds was one part of a pretty complete game for the Griz. The defense came up with four sacks (two each by Jace Palmer and Mike Stadnyk) and four turnovers.
The Griz were flagged 10 times for 120 yards, following a pattern that has hit PSU's foes this season. Some special teams miscues also bugged UM, but the visitors rolled up a 427-210 advantage in total yards and held possession for over 43 minutes.
That's after the Griz found little offensive rhythm in an uneven first half. Senior quarterback Cole Bergquist had a 21-yard TD run in the first quarter, but the ensuing PAT kick was blocked.
That left the score 9-2, and a Danny Urrego field goal cut the gap to 9-5 early in the second quarter.
An interception by UM's Trumaine Johnson set the Griz up with a short field late in the second quarter, but that drive ended with a missed field goal by Brody McKnight.
"The Vikings had a lot of answers," said Bergquist, who was 16-for-23 for 118 yards and also ran for 91 yards. "They were getting good pressure. It wasn't exactly what we prepared for. I thought we came into the game super well-prepared, and they just changed it up.
"But after playing here for four years I'm used to that. When people play the Grizzlies, they've got to try and find something new."
"We really respected their big-play potential, and last year we played man on them and they scored on us," said Coach Jerry Glanville, who scrapped his three-man front for four down linemen and five defensive backs. "Because of that, we didn't want to give up a 70-yarder, which they've been getting on everybody else."
