Townsend grad signs with Rocky football
Brad Eliel, a 2007 graduate of Broadwater High School in Townsend, has signed a letter of intent to play football at Rocky Mountain College this fall.
Eliel, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive lineman, played last year at NCAA Division III Crown College in Minnesota, where he received all-conference honorable mention.
During his prep career, Eliel received all-conference honors in both football and basketball, as well as academic all-conference in 2007. Eliel plans to major in environmental science.
Brad is the son of Tom and Joan Eliel of Townsend.
H-Town Eagles take five of seven
The H-Town Eagles Boxing Club competed in Bozeman this past Saturday, winning five of seven fights. The winners were 9-year-old 60-pounder Jory Songer, 9-year-old 75-pounder Justin Songer, 14-year-old 114-pounder Ryan Maier, 15-year-old 119-pounder Timmy Mason and 15-year-old 132-pounder Jayme Rupp. Rupp scored a standing eight count with a left cross in the third round in his bout against Shyloe Davis from Regina, Canada before winning a decision.
Rupp and Mason will compete in the National Junior Olympics in Denver, Colo. in early June.
Duran Junior Caferro will compete in the USA National Tournament which will coincide with the National Junior Olympics.
Capital JV finishes season strong
The Capital High JV girls softball team ended its season on a 16-game winning streak. The Bruins' record ended up being 17-2 for the season.
The Bruins played Billings Skyview the first game of the weekend and came from behind in the seventh inning, winning the game 6-5. The Bruins were down 5-3 going into the inning and Ashley Blanton started the seventh inning, getting on base thanks to a dropped third strike. Brittany Hash hit a double scoring Blanton. Jordan Johnston got on by a fielder's choice as Skyview tried to throw out Hash at home and Hash was called safe. Angie Boyer hit a game-winning double to bring in Johnston for the win.
The Bruins then went on to defeat Billings West 6-5. The Bruins were led offensively by Ashley Hicks, who went 2-4, Rian Bartsch, who went 3-3, Hash, who went 3-4 and Jordan Peterson, who went 2-2.
Jessie Apple and Jayden Tripp pitched outstandingly the whole year for the Bruins, neither one losing a game.
The Bruins were coached by Nathan Miller and assisted by Jerry Smith.
U-13 boys drop three in Coeur d' Alene
The Helena U-13 boys faced tough competition in the Coeur d'Alene tournament.
In the first round of games, Helena played the Spokane Elite, the eventual tournament champions. Helena was shocked by the speed of the Elite and gave up three goals in the first half. The defense stepped up to the competition and in the second half kept the Elite from scoring. The final score was 3-0. Helena next played a team from Montana, the Stevensville Sabres. Stevensville made a sloppy goal in the first half and never got close again. Final score was 1-0.
On Sunday, Helena played the tough Coeur d'Alene Sting. Helena was never able to put anything together. Finally, mid-fielder Nick Solheim passed to Hayden Haft for the team's only goal of the tournament. Final score was 4-1.
The team will play in Great Falls this weekend at the state championships.
