In their first crosstown tennis match, the Capital High boys served Helena their first loss of the season.
"Their boys came their ready to win," said Helena coach Jess Munro. "Ours weren't mentally focused."
Capital won the match 5-3.
"It was a fantastic team effort," said Capital coach Scott Harris. "They got the No. 1 and 2 singles, but we came up big in our other spots."
In the No. 3 spot, Zach Lubek beat Levi George and Cory Lewis beat Willie O'Brien.
"Those were pivotal matches for us," said Harris. "Zach won in straight sets."
Helena's Lander Jewitt beat Adam Strizich in No. 1 singles and Will Atwood beat Brock Willems at the No. 2 spot.
"Lander did a great job. He used all of his strokes and was so mentally prepared he jumped out really early," said Munro. "Atwood struggled a bit in the first set but opened up in the second."
In doubles play, Helena's Hack Wilson and Justin Folsom won in the No. 1 spot, but Capital walked away with the three other matches.
In No. 3 doubles play, Eric Carrizales and Joe Stewart beat Colin Cooney and Aven Satre-Meloy.
"Joe just came back from a broken arm," said Harris. "He hadn't played all season but looked great out there. He said the arm didn't bother him at all."
The girls split 4-4, with Capital dominating the singles, and Helena cleaning up in doubles.
"I'm really pleased anytime we can come up with a tie against Capital," said Munro. "They're a good team."
The big story for Capital was the Fox sisters.
Sarah Fox beat Susan Wheeler 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, and her freshman sister Loren Fox swept Sydney Duke at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 in her first match.
"That was awesome," said Harris. "We just told her to come out and have fun and not worry about winning, but she played amazing."
In doubles play, Helena's Brianna Stahly and Gigi Suarez won the No. 1 match.
"They practiced really hard all week and it was nice to see that," said Munro.
At No. 3 doubles, Angela Arbour and Nikki Burkett beat Jane Zeller and Kelsey Wagoner 6-3, 6-2.
"They made it deep into the second day at last weekend's tournament," said Munro. "And they picked up right where they left off."
Both teams will travel to Missoula this weekend for the Missoula Invite.
"There will be seven teams there," said Munro. "The three Missoula schools, both of the Helena schools, Flathead, and Whitefish."
