When the postseason hits, records get thrown out the window.
No one tried to prove that more in the opening round of the Frontier Conference playoffs than No. 8 seed Montana Tech.
The Orediggers (8-21 overall, 1-13 conference) tried to fight their way out of the cellar against top-seed and No. 6-ranked nationally Westminster (26-4, 11-3) on Thursday night.
But, Jeramie Hopson grabbed a missed 3-pointer by Brian Davidson at the buzzer and Westminster escaped on their home court in Salt Lake City with a 71-69 win over the Orediggers.
Conference scoring leader Geoff Payne scored a game-high 23 points for the Griffins, who will host No. 4-seed Carroll College (20-6, 9-5) in the semifinals.
Hopson added 14 points and Nate Sanchez 10 for Westminster.
Tech's Josh Monagle went 9-of-14 from the floor to lead the 'Diggers with 18 points. Davidson and James York added 12 points apiece while Tony Trudnowski and Ivan Sljivar each contributed 10.

Senior guard Chris Johnson scored 24 points and hit six 3-pointers to lead the second-seeded Lights to the semifinals of the Frontier Conference playoffs.
Johnson was 9-of-13 shooting and hit a pair of 3s early in the second half to help the Lights lead by as much as 11.
The Warriors cut Northern's lead to four points with a minute left, but missed 3-point attempt with about 40 seconds left. The Lights struggled from the free throw line and a 3-pointer by Curtis Allen cut the margin to 62-59 with 22 seconds left, but LCSC couldn't get any closer.
Travis Noble added 21 points and drained four 3-pointers for Northern.
The Warriors were led by junior forward Tanner McIntosh with 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Daniel Williams had 13 points off the bench. Senior guard Curtis Allen and freshman guard Terrell Wallace had 10 apiece.
Northern (22-8, 10-4) will head to No. 3-seed Rocky Mountain College while the Warriors finish their season 11-14, 5-9.

University of Great Falls 70
Senior post Devin Uskoski led five Rocky scorers in double digits with 17 points as the Bears (22-8, 10-4) broke away from a 37-34 halftime lead to beat the Argos (8-23, 2-12).
James Bulluck and Nate Richardson added 15 points apiece while Anthony Allen and Chase Sukut both scored 14 for the second-seeded Bears, who will host MSU-Northern on Saturday.
Rayshaun Ames had a game-high 33 points for UGF while Matt Neimeyer added 11 points and nine rebounds.
