The Carroll College cross-country teams placed first and second against other participating colleges at the Carroll Open Saturday morning.

The Saints women finished with 44 points to beat the University of Great Falls with 98, while the men's squad fell to the Argonauts 26 to 43.

Runners from local clubs also participated, challenging the younger teams and picking up individual wins in both of the races.

Thomas Jodin (16:02) of the Vigilante Track Club and Heather Lieberg (19:36) of the Has Beens team both won their respective races.

Meanwhile, the top collegiate runners were both Carroll College athletes. Freshman Robbie Brooks finished the 5-kilometer course in 16:11 to lead the Saints, while Jade Johnstone led with a time of 20:21.

"The women ran really well. They're looking strong and looking toward November," said Johnstone, a sophomore and veteran on the two-year-old team. "We're still very fresh."

UGF's solid pack finished with all five varsity runners in the men's top 10. Moses Leavens led the Argos with a time of 16:28. He trailed Flathead Community College's Logan Norris, who placed second with a 16:17.

"They have a solid pack," said Saints' sophomore Taylor Gregory, who finished eighth overall, second for his squad. "There's definitely a rivalry there (with UGF)."
