Belfry High began its football season with the district-required eight players, said board chairman Cheryl Brown. Two athletes dropped out after five practices and the program was discontinued.

Brown said the district still plans to offer football next year and said the junior high program continues.

The Belfry board has also voted to sanction a boys' cross country program with Wayne McClane as coach.

Roberts superintendent Randy Durr said the district advocated for a varsity schedule this year. Eleven players committed to the program last spring, but not enough joined this fall to even play a junior varsity schedule.
