Did he say "run-and-shoot" or "done-and-shot?"
Two weeks into Big Sky Conference football and things have gone pretty much as planned -- with the exception of Jerry Glanville and Portland State. The Vikings and their new, big-name coach haven't shown much after being picked to finish near the top of the league this year.
Portland dropped a 26-17 decision to UC Davis after leading 17-3. The Vikings are now 0-2 on the season after falling to McNeese State last week.
"A giant disappointment," Glanville told the Oregonian. "I thought that we had control of the game right before the half, but made a crucial mental error and did things we can't do."
Just two games into the season, the Vikings are in a fix in terms of making the postseason without winning the league title, which seems like a far cry at this point. Portland has a chance to get back on track this week against Sacramento State as league play begins, then travels to San Diego State the following weekend.
The Montana Grizzlies played as advertised in walloping Fort Lewis 49-0. UM has now outscored the Skyhawks 104-0 in two meetings. If there was a low point for UM it would take some nitpicking.
"The thing I'm excited about is, it didn't matter who we put in the game, they played their tail off, they executed," fifth-year Griz coach Bobby Hauck said. "They did a nice job."
Lex Hilliard ran 54 yards for a touchdown on UM's first offensive play, but managed just 32 yards on 13 carries after that. UM is idle this week, then hosts the University at Albany a week from this Saturday in its final non-conference game.
Northern Arizona made a decent showing against the PAC 10 Arizona Wildcats before losing 45-24. The Lumberjacks were down 14-3 at halftime, but gave up 24 third quarter points.
Northern Arizona was plagued with 15 penalties for 152 yards, but put together a pair of fourth quarter scoring drives to keep the score respectable. Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama connected on a career-high five touchdown passes.
"Arizona had a lot of time to throw the ball," Northern Arizona coach Jerome Souers said. "That was a demonstration of execution on their line of scrimmage."
Northern Arizona travels two-time defending champion Appalachian State this Saturday.
Idaho State roughed up Southern Oregon 37-11 as the Bengals amassed 512 yards in total offense. Idaho State got 136 of those via the running of tailback Josh Barnett, who carried the ball just 14 times.
The Bengals play at Oregon State this week.
Northern Colorado found out what Montana State fans already knew -- Danny Woodhead is very good.
The Chadron State running back collected 280 totals (147 rushing, 133 receiving) as the Eagles spanked the Bears 31-0. Woodhead is the reigning NCAA Division II player of the year.
Northern Colorado went meekly at best, collecting just 214 yards and giving 94 of those back in penalties. The Bears take on San Diego this week.
Montana State, Eastern Washington, Weber State and Sacramento State were all off this week. Coming up, MSU hosts Dixie State, Eastern Washington entertains UC Davis, Weber State is at Cal Poly and Sacramento State hosts Portland State.
