It wasn't a very good day for the Capital High and Helena softball teams as they traveled to Billings on Saturday.

Neither won a game against Billings West or Senior, but nothing was really on the line as the local teams finished up their regular season with the non-conference doubleheaders.

The Bruins (11-6-1 overall, 10-2 conference) won the Western AA conference, giving them a straight shot to the state tournament before hitting the road this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bengals (8-9-1, 7-5) are looking toward their best-of-three playoff with Flathead on Thursday.

Capital

The Bruins were edged out 3-2 by Billings Senior in the first game after carrying the game into the eighth inning.

Senior's winning run came on a sacrifice fly from Cassie Degner to score Kylie Kufeld from third.

Ashley Ames worked the mound for the Bruins and also led the team at the plate. She finished 3-for-4, getting a double and the team's lone RBI.

Capital outhit the Broncs 6-5.

The Bruins didn't have much left after the close match-up, losing their second game to Billings West 11-1.

The Bears finished with 14 hits in the game that was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Capital's Jacie Zomadz cracked a solo home run in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-1, but the Bears knocked in six runs in the bottom of the inning to give them the final lead.

Kalli Heller also had a hit in the game.

Helena

The Bengals couldn't get the runs on the board to start their first game against Billings West, giving up the contest 5-1.

The Bears scored runs in the second and fourth innings before getting a three-run fifth for a 5-0 lead.

Helena's Sara Sesselman knocked in the team's only run with a double in the sixth. She went 1-for-3 while Carly Grant and Noel Perez each added a hit.

Josie Grotbo got the loss on the mound as West outhit the Bengals 7-3.

While Helena got a good start, they couldn't keep up with Senior as the Broncs gave them a 14-5 loss.

The Bengals led 4-1 in the first inning as Senior's Cassidy Butler struggled on the mound. Kirstie Thomas would replace her in the second and give up just one run the rest of the game.

While they could get on the board, the Bengals still struggled to get the hits. They finished with just three as Grant, Syd Carpenter and Carmon Cole all got knocks. Carpenter had a double and 2 RBIs while Cole finished with one.
