Brodersen, Johnson cop state bowling titles

The Montana USBC Association recently completed the 2009 state bowling tournament, with two local keglers winning state championships. John Brodersen captured the open singles scratch title, while Terri Johnson won the women's scratch singles crown.

Brodersen, a former two-time state all-events champion, rolled a 795 to earn his latest championship. He placed second in A Division handicap singles, with an 813, and finished fourth in the scratch all-events, totaling 2,062.

Brodersen was also a member of the scratch runners-up No. 4 MAETECIN team, which knocked down 3,384 pins.

Johnson fired a 662 for her ladies title. Other local top-three female placers were Cynthia Boyd (776) and Debbie Pellegrini (759), who placed second and third, respectively, in the Division II handicap singles.

In the Division I competition, Kelly Mosier took third in the handicap all-events, while the duo of Maria Thorpe and Michelle Anderson placed third in the doubles handicap.

Placing third in Division III, were Colleen Gould in the singles handicap; Patricia Hertweck and Sandra McCann in doubles handicap; and A Wide Range in the team handicap.

Helena soccer pair signs with Walla Walla

Helena High co-captains Chase Farrell and Haley Klarich have signed with Walla Walla Community College, assistant coach Max Weber announced earlier this week.

Farrell is a two-time, all-conference honorable mention pick and earned all-state honors during the Bengals runner-up season. Helena won the state title his junior year and Farrell also won two state championships with his Helena Arsenal club teams.

Farrell will be primarily competing for minutes as an outside or central defender for the Warriors, Weber said.

Klarich was a two-time, all-state selection and chosen as the Montana Western Conference Player of the Year as a senior.

Before moving to Helena from Washington state, the midfielder was a two-time South Puget Sound all-league selection.

Both have been invited to and will be competing in the Shodair Senior Soccer Classic on July 25 in Helena.

"We are thrilled to have these two young men join our program," Weber, a former all-state star of Great Falls High School and the Helena Arsenal, said. "Chase and Haley are two of the best players in the state of Montana and both come from a Helena soccer pedigree that is second to none in the state. These boys know how to win, know how to lead, and we look for them to make an immediate impact in our program."
