Carroll basketball team tops Dickinson State in season opener

DILLON - Andy Garland had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Carroll College men's basketball team shot 56 percent from the field en route to a season-opening 71-54 victory over Dickinson State in the opening round of the Craig Finberg Memorial Tournament on Friday night.

Chris Medina added 15 points for the Saints (1-0), who face Multnomah College of Oregon tonight.

Carroll made 31 of 55 shots (56.4 percent) from the floor, including nine of 26 from 3-point range. Casey Rodgers scored nine and Jordan Reyes added seven for the Saints.

Dickinson State (0-1) was led by Matthew Lee's 12 points. Nathan Lebsock was held to nine on 2-of-12 shooting, while Nate Williams and Joshua Henry had eight each.

Dickinson State shot just 34.9 percent from the field (20-of-58).

Carroll trailed 12-5 early, but Garland scored six points in a 19-2 run that put the Saints ahead 24-14.

Carroll's 41-23 lead was its biggest of the game to that point.

Dickinson State cut the lead to nine at 48-39 midway through the second half, but that was as close as the contest would get.

Jordan Reyes and Daniel Pearson each hit 3-pointers to boost the Carroll lead to 54-39.

Garland sank a 3-point basket with 6:00 left to increase the lead to 68-42. Garland made 8-of-14 shots from the field. Medina sank 6-of-9, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range.

Each team had 34 rebounds.
