Seven local soccer players were selected to the 2009 Class AA all-state teams, with three Helena High boys, two Capital High boys, and one girl from each school making the roster.
Senior Kelsey Grey, a defender for the Capital girls, received her second all-state citation, having also been selected as a junior in 2008. Demi Wignot, a senior for the Bengal ladies, was tabbed at her forward position. Wignot (pronounced WIN-yoh) led Helena in scoring with four goals and three assists.
On the boys side, Capital juniors Derik Chaney, forward, and Nelson Edquest, midfielder, were chosen to the all-state squad. Chaney paced the Bruins in scoring, with six goals and six assists. Edquest chipped in four goals and three assists.
Bengals making the all-state are senior goalkeeper Riley Sheldon, junior forward Stewart Miller, and junior defender Dustin Bingham.
Sheldon helped Helena to seven shutouts on the year. Miller was the team's leading scorer, and second in the Western AA, with 11 goals and three assists.
Chosen to the 2009 all-conference team were Capital's senior defenders Nate Rasor and Dallin Harris, and junior keeper Zach Clinch; and Helena junior midfielder Micah Meadows. Meadows was also honored last year as a sophomore.
