A benefit rodeo and function for bareback rider Scott Owens will take place in Townsend on Sept. 19.The "Crazy Legs Classic" is under the auspices of the Broadwater Rodeo Association and friends.
Owens was seriously injured during the Stanford Rodeo in July, when a bronc went over backwards in the chute, breaking the Toston cowboy's back. Owens was in first place in the Montana Pro Rodeo Association's bareback standings at the time of the accident. He underwent surgery, receiving eight pins and two rods in his back. Owens, who is a rancher south of Townsend, is unable to work for at least a year. He and his wife Shawna have two small children, Sterling and Spur. Scott's bareback riding career is over.
The Crazy Legs Classic will consist of barrel racing, team roping, bareback and saddle bronc riding; a taco feed, live music, dancing, refreshments, and a live auction. There will also be a drawing for a yearling philly, donated by Owens' grandparents, Ed and Judy Solomon of Havre. All proceeds from the event will go to Scott's hospital bills. For information, contact Dick Lyman at 406-799-1469, or John Walsh at 406-439-2843.
