The Carroll College soccer team got a chance to play some of the younger women who don't often see the pitch much on Saturday, cruising to an 11-0 romp over Southwestern College (Ariz.) at Nelson Stadium.
"This is their first year in the program and they don't have any backup players," Saints head coach Dave Thorvilson said. "We knew coming in we were going to be the dominant team."
Every player on the Carroll roster saw action, and nine different strikers scored goals. Defender Abby Hoover and forward Sophie Johnson both came off the bench to card two goals apiece. Midfielders Tayt Ellison and Laura Beck were among the substitutes who scored, while Abby Coburn, Molly Clark, Katie Martin, Lauren Cacopardo and Meghan O'Connell also netted points for the Saints (8-4-1, 1-1-1 Frontier Conference).
"It was cold, so it was good to get the starters about 15 minutes then sit them on the bench," Thorvilson said. "All players deserve their time on the pitch, so it's good to get games like this to remind them why they practice so hard."
Freshman Erin Volz made her first collegiate start in goal for the Saints and played the entire 90 minutes, but she didn't have to do much work. Southwestern College, which hasn't scored a goal all year, let alone win a game, didn't have a single shot in the contest.
Walsh University (Ohio) comes to Helena on Monday to face the Saints.
